Ask the seller directly: "Is this material kiln-treated, at what temperature, and for how long?" A vague answer means the answer is no.
2. Ask Where the Wood Actually Came From
Real reclaimed wood has a story a seller can tell you: a specific barn, a demolished warehouse, old fencing, wine tanks. "Reclaimed-style," "vintage-look," and "distressed" all mean new lumber that was beaten up in a factory. Provenance isn't just romance — origin tells you about density, patina depth, and likely species.
3. Understand the Grading Language
There is no universal grading standard for reclaimed material, so ask for definitions:
Character grade — nail holes, checks, bolt marks, color variation. This is the look most buyers want. Select/clean grade — fewer defects, more uniform. Costs more. Structural reuse — needs engineering verification; don't accept "it held up a barn for 100 years" as a load rating.
