A solid mantel is one piece of reclaimed timber, priced by the board foot (depth x height x length). It's heavy — a 6-foot Douglas Fir mantel can weigh 80+ pounds — and mounts on a hidden steel bracket.
A box beam is a hollow, three-sided beam built from reclaimed boards with seamless mitered corners. It looks identical once installed, weighs 60-75% less, and slips over a simple wood cleat. If your mantel is going on drywall or you're doing the install yourself, box beam construction is usually the smarter buy, and it's priced by the linear foot.
What Drives the Price Up (or Down)
Species. Softwoods (Fir, Pine, Cedar) cost less than hardwoods (Walnut, Oak). Dimensions. Depth and height matter as much as length — a chunky 8x8 costs far more board feet than a 5x7. Provenance and character. Hand-hewn faces, original saw marks, and documented salvage history add value. Finishing. Kiln-drying, sanding, and sealing should be included. What About Shipping Across the Country?
This is the question we get most from buyers outside California. Mantels ship one of two ways:

Red Flags When Buying Online
"Reclaimed-style" or "distressed" — that's new lumber with fake wear. No mention of kiln treatment. Genuine reclaimed wood must be kiln-dried (we treat at 140°F for 72+ hours) to kill insects and stabilize moisture. No kiln, no deal. Prices that seem too good. Salvaging, de-nailing, milling, and drying old timber is labor-intensive. A $200 "reclaimed" mantel almost never is.
